The zombie apocalpyse will not be televised. It'll be YouTubed and blogged. So says George Romero in his latest zombie nightmare, Diary of Dead. And he delivers his message with a cinematic punch to the gut. In Diary, Romero turns camcorder-style storytelling (Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield) toward the shambling undead with potent results. As the film progresses, the barely seen cameraman and eventually the camera itself, transform into a sinister presence. This underlying tension generates maximum psychological discomfort. The deranged script carries us into terrain where few mainstream zombie flicks would dare venture. Surprise suicides, matricide with a compound bow, a zombie aquarium, bad-*** Amish farmers and more. And, of course it's bristling with the staples of the genre including head shots, nasty bites and a cavalcade of slow-walking corpses. Die-hard Romero fans will savor picking up on the many references the director makes to his famous zombie oeuvre. 9 out of 10 stars.
